The Rivers State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Wisdom Gate International School, Eligbolo, following the death of a two-year-old pupil at the facility.
The tragic incident, which occurred on March 17, 2026, prompted an investigation by the State Ministry of Education to determine the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
In a statement issued on April 15, 2026, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peters Nwagor, said the Ministry had engaged with the school’s management and carried out an independent review of the incident.
While expressing deep sympathy to the bereaved family, the government urged the publicg to respect their privacy and refrain from speculation.
“As a Ministry, we have interfaced with the management of the school, conducted our own independent investigations into the incident,” the statement noted.
Following the review, the government announced the suspension of academic activities at Wisdom Gate International School, Campus 1, Eligbolo.
The statement added that the school would remain closed until all issues relating to the incident are fully resolved.
Dr. Nwagor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of pupils across the state, stressing that strict quality assurance measures would continue to be enforced in both public and private schools.
The development has drawn attention to safety standards in early childhood education centres, with stakeholders calling for stricter monitoring and enforcement of regulations.
