A former Chief Executive of the National Youth Service Corps, Reverend Peter Okuromade, has urged renewed emphasis on moral values among Corps Members, stressing the need to prepare them for future leadership responsibilities in Nigeria.

He made the call while receiving the 23rd Director-General of the scheme, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, during a courtesy visit to his residence in Abuja.

Speaking during the visit, Okuromade highlighted the importance of instilling discipline and responsible citizenship in young graduates, particularly during orientation camp activities. He noted that Corps Members, as emerging leaders and role models, must be guided by strong ethical standards to positively influence society.

The former NYSC boss, who briefly led the scheme in 2002, commended Brigadier General Nafiu’s leadership style, describing it as impactful and people-oriented. He also applauded the Director-General’s focus on the welfare of both staff and Corps Members.

In a related development, another former Director-General, Major General Suleiman Kazaure (rtd), also lauded the contributions of the NYSC to national development. During a similar visit by the current DG to his Abuja residence, Kazaure acknowledged the scheme’s role in promoting unity, job creation, youth empowerment, and mentorship across the country.

Kazaure, who served as NYSC helmsman between 2016 and 2019, advised the current leadership to deepen collaboration with key stakeholders, particularly in ensuring the safety of Corps Members and officials expected to serve as ad hoc personnel during the 2027 general elections.

He expressed confidence in the current administration of the scheme and pledged his continued support through advisory roles when necessary.

Earlier, Brigadier General Nafiu paid tribute to past leaders of the organisation, acknowledging their contributions to its growth and achievements. He reaffirmed his commitment to consolidating on their legacies and advancing the objectives of the NYSC.
