The Chairman of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, Aniefiok Nkom, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering all projects, programmes earmarked for the council’s 75th anniversary celebration before the end of December 2026.
Nkom made this declaration on Monday during the April edition of the monthly Covenant Service held at the council secretariat in Ikot Ekpene.
The event forms part of activities commemorating the Diamond Jubilee of the local government.
Addressing attendees, the chairman disclosed plans to launch a youth-focused empowerment initiative, including specialised training in truck driving and crane operations. According to him, the programme is strategically designed to prepare young people for emerging job opportunities expected with the anticipated commencement of operations at the Deep-Sea Port in the region.
He encouraged interested youths to register with the council and take advantage of government-backed initiatives aimed at enhancing skills, boosting employability, and driving economic growth.
On environmental concerns, Nkom expressed dissatisfaction with the persistent indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage systems, describing the practice as a major threat to public health and sanitation. He announced that the council is putting measures in place to improve waste management infrastructure and will soon deploy a task force to enforce compliance and penalise offenders.
The chairman also raised alarm over the vandalisation of public assets, urging residents to take collective responsibility for safeguarding government property. He reiterated that his administration remains committed to ongoing rural road grading projects to improve accessibility and stimulate development across communities.
Delivering a sermon at the service, Camilus Umoh spoke on the theme, “The Power of Gratitude,” drawing from Bible (Luke 17:17–19). He highlighted gratitude as a transformative virtue capable of attracting greater blessings and commended the council for marking its anniversary with thanksgiving.
The cleric urged residents to cultivate a spirit of appreciation and avoid entitlement, while offering prayers for sustained peace, unity, and progress in Ikot Ekpene.
The event brought together government officials, community leaders, and residents in a reflective gathering that underscored both celebration and renewed commitment to development within the local government area.
