Stakeholders in humanitarian response and security have called for sustained investment in mine action as a pathway to peace and recovery in Nigeria’s Northeast, during the 2026 observance of the International Mine Action Day held in Damaturu.

The event, themed “ Invest in Peace, Invest in Mine Action, ” brought together organizations from Adamawa State, Borno State, and Yobe State, alongside humanitarian partners and government agencies.

The gathering underscored the urgent need for coordinated action to mitigate the dangers posed by explosive remnants of conflict across the region.

Participants used the platform to assess progress made in mine risk education, victim assistance, and explosive ordnance awareness, while also strengthening partnerships aimed at improving community safety.

Discussions highlighted ongoing efforts to reduce casualties and enhance resilience among vulnerable populations.

Speakers who spoke at the summit stressed that mine action is not only a humanitarian necessity but also a critical enabler of long-term stability. They noted that clearing explosive hazards allows displaced populations to safely return home, resume farming and economic activities, and rebuild their communities.

The event ended with a renewed commitment from stakeholders to deepen collaboration and scale up interventions, with a shared understanding that investing in mine action is essential to achieving sustainable development and lasting peace in conflict-affected areas.
