Tragedy struck in Jos North on Sunday night as a 31-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ibrahim Haruna Abdulkareem, was brutally killed during a reprisal attack in Anguwan Rukuba, just two days before he was scheduled to complete his service year.

Abdulkareem, a Muslim corps member serving at Almustafa Private School, was reportedly riding his commercial motorcycle around 7 p.m. when he was attacked by rampaging youths. He had taken up operating an okada to supplement his monthly NYSC allowance and support his pregnant wife and younger siblings following the death of their father.

According to his younger brother, Mustafa Haruna Abdulkareem, the family became worried when repeated calls to Ibrahim’s phone went unanswered. His body was later discovered badly mutilated.

Due to tensions in the area, only one member of the family was permitted to attend the burial in order to prevent further escalation of violence.

His grieving mother, Zainab Hasan, condemned the killing, saying her son was murdered without provocation and that his motorcycle was also taken.

“They killed him for no reason and even took his motorcycle. I will never forgive those who did this,” she said.

The incident is part of a series of reprisal attacks that have heightened tensions in parts of Jos, where cycles of violence between communities have continued to claim innocent lives, deepening fears of further unrest.

Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had visited the state yesterday, assured residents that the experience will not repeat.
