Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and ex-Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Kwankwaso formalized his membership on Monday after registering and receiving his party card at Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Bompai, Kano.
The high-profile event attracted prominent political figures across party lines, including ADC National Chairman and former Senate President, David Mark; former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Tambuwal; former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi; Senator Dino Melaye; and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun, among others.
The former Minister of Defence had on Sunday announced his resignation from the NNPP, describing the move as a difficult but necessary step.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party with immediate effect,” Kwankwaso said in a statement.
He explained that his decision was driven by the need for strategic political realignment in response to the evolving national landscape.
“As a committed and bona fide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make.
However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he stated.
Kwankwaso expressed appreciation to the NNPP leadership, particularly the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, as well as members of the party for their support during his time in the platform.
He also thanked members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and his supporters nationwide, assuring them of continued collaboration in pursuit of a better Nigeria.
“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.
Kwankwaso’s defection is expected to further reshape the opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
