A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Michael Bush, has formally declared his intention to contest the governorship election in Akwa Ibom State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Bush made the declaration on Wednesday evening in a statement addressed to the people of the state, announcing his readiness to seek the mandate of Akwa Ibom residents to lead the state from May 29, 2027.
In the statement, Bush said his decision to join the race was driven by a desire to reposition the state and ensure its resources benefit the people more directly.
“At exactly 20:27 hours today, Wednesday, April 1, 2026, I am elated to step out and formally announce that it shall be my honour to serve in the office of Governor of our great state,” he said.
The PDP governorship hopeful described the forthcoming political journey as an important moment for the state, expressing confidence that with the support of the people and divine guidance, Akwa Ibom could be “retrieved and returned to its people.”
According to him, his administration, if elected, would prioritize inclusive governance and ensure that citizens have greater access to government and leadership.
“Akwa Ibom people must enjoy the wealth of our state; Akwa Ibom people must have access to their government and their leaders. They should no longer play second fiddle in their own land,” Bush stated.
He also hinted at an active campaign season in the coming months, noting that his team of volunteers would engage residents through regular briefings both online and through physical meetings across the state.
Bush further called on residents to pray for the country and the state as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
“Please pray for Nigeria, pray for Akwa Ibom, and if you can, pray for me,” he added.
With the declaration, Bush becomes one of the early contenders positioning for the PDP ticket in Akwa Ibom State, where political activities ahead of the 2027 governorship race are gradually beginning to gather pace.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to release the official timetable for the 2027 general elections in due course.
