The Israeli military announced it has killed Gholam Reza Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Basij militia, in a targeted strike in Tehran.

Key points:

The strike was conducted with intelligence from Israel’s Military Intelligence and executed by the Air Force.

Soleimani led the Basij forces, Iran’s internal security paramilitary, for six years.

If confirmed, this would be the highest-level assassination in the war since U.S.-Israeli strikes killed former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and members of his family on February 28.

Soleimani, born in 1965, has been sanctioned by the U.S., EU, and other countries for his role in suppressing dissent in Iran.

Iran has not yet confirmed the Israeli claim.

The situation is developing, and further details are expected.
