An official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun State, Mr. Abass Olalekan, has been taken into police custody following the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, on Tuesday.

The deceased, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, reportedly died from complications related to pregnancy.

Mr. Olalekan, who serves as the NYSC Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South, is currently in custody at the Ogun State Police Command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.

Sources indicated that the late Ariyo had earlier terminated the pregnancy but later developed complications that resulted in her death. She was subsequently buried at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape–Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.

Her death comes just weeks after another female corps member, Adeleye Mary, who was also serving in Abeokuta South LGA, died under unclear circumstances.

Mary was posted to Ogun State Television (OGTV) as her Place of Primary Assignment, and both corps members were reportedly close associates.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the LGI may have had a personal relationship with the late Ariyo; however, authorities have not officially established this claim.

Confirming developments, a police source disclosed that Mr. Olalekan is currently in custody, while the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, stated that the case is under investigation.

“I can confirm that the case of the demise of Victoria Ariyo is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department,” Babaseyi said, declining further comments on the alleged arrest.

The police have assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
