President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will on Tuesday depart Abuja for a historic State Visit to the United Kingdom at the invitation of Their Majesties, King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
The President will be accompanied by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for the visit scheduled to hold from March 18 to 19 at Windsor Castle.
The trip marks the first State Visit by a Nigerian leader to the UK in 37 years and also makes President Tinubu the first Nigerian Head of State to be hosted by a British monarch at Windsor Castle.
According to a press release signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the visit is aimed at strengthening the long-standing bilateral relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
Discussions are expected to focus on key areas such as immigration, trade, investment and cultural exchange.
During the visit, King Charles III will host President Tinubu and his wife at Windsor Castle, where they will view a special exhibition from the Royal Collection highlighting items connected to Nigeria.
The two leaders are also expected to hold private talks and meet organisations involved in interfaith dialogue.
A State Banquet will be held in honour of the Nigerian delegation.
President Tinubu will also hold a bilateral meeting with the British Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, at 10 Downing Street.
The engagement is expected to culminate in the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding covering trade, investment, defence cooperation and cultural relations.
A major highlight of the visit will be the signing of a £746 million financing agreement between the United Kingdom Export Finance (UKEF), the Nigerian Ports Authority and the Federal Ministry of Finance.
The deal is intended to support the refurbishment of the Lagos Port Complex (Apapa Quays) and the Tin Can Island Port Complex.
The President is also billed to attend the Nigerian Modernism exhibition showcasing contemporary arts and culture, and to meet with Nigerian and British business leaders as well as members of the diaspora community.
Members of the President’s entourage include Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Culture and Creative Economy Hannatu Musawa, and National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu, among others.
