Osun State Police Command has arrested two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service in connection with a shooting incident that left a driver dead in Osogbo, the state capital.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday in the Dada Estate area, reportedly happened while the officers were pursuing vehicles suspected to be foreign-used (tokunbo).

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, the suspects were identified as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel.

According to the police, operatives swiftly responded after receiving a report of the incident and apprehended the two officers.

The driver of an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla, one of the vehicles allegedly being chased, was said to have sustained gunshot injuries and was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital.

Police authorities added that the body of the yet-to-be-identified victim had been deposited in a morgue.

Items reportedly recovered from the scene include a Beretta pistol, 11 rounds of 9mm live ammunition, an expanded shell, a white Toyota Corolla with Lagos registration number AAA 400 GQ, and an ash Toyota Corolla with registration number GFQ 0982.

The suspects are currently in police custody, while the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, has ordered a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The command assured residents that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law and urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the victim was reportedly driving along the Osogbo–Iwo Road near Onibueja in Ido-Osun when operatives in plain clothes allegedly opened fire on his vehicle.
