Edo State Police Command has called on the parents of a student of Igbinedion Education Centre, Benin City, who was allegedly assaulted by his classmates in a viral video, to file a formal complaint to enable the commencement of an investigation.

Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, said the invitation was necessary to properly identify the victim, ensure those responsible are held accountable. She stressed that bullying, assault remain criminal offences, urging the family to come forward.

The incident sparked widespread outrage after a video circulated on social media showing two students physically attacking a fellow student while another recorded the episode.

In response, the school management announced the expulsion of the two students allegedly involved in the assault, describing their conduct as disturbing and inconsistent with the institution’s values.

In a statement issued on Friday, the school reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on bullying, intimidation, harassment, cultism and all forms of violence, adding that the matter had been reported to the appropriate authorities.

The management also stated that it was providing support to those affected and cooperating fully with ongoing efforts to address the incident.

A staff member, who spoke anonymously, disclosed that the parents of the students involved had reportedly sought an amicable settlement with the victim’s family.

Meanwhile, human rights activist Kola Edokpayi condemned the incident, calling for firm disciplinary measures to deter similar acts and ensure the safety of students in schools.
