At least 10 people, including two children, have been killed after Russian missile struck a residential apartment building in Kharkiv, officials said.

The strike destroyed an entire section of a five-storey building, causing it to collapse from the first to the fifth floor, trapping residents beneath the rubble.

Kharkiv Mayor, Ihor Terekhov said those killed included a primary school teacher and her young son, as well as a 13-year-old girl and her mother. At least 16 other people were reported injured.

Emergency responders continued searching through the debris as authorities warned more victims could still be trapped.

The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office said preliminary findings indicate the attack involved an Izdeliye‑30 cruise missile. A war crimes investigation has been opened into the incident.

Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strike was part of a broader overnight assault by Russia, which involved 29 missiles and about 480 drones targeting energy infrastructure and other locations across Ukraine.

Air defence systems reportedly intercepted 19 missiles and 453 drones during the attack.

Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, called for a stronger response from Ukraine’s international partners, urging the European Union and allies to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence capabilities.

The attack comes amid stalled peace negotiations and growing concerns that Russian forces could launch a new offensive in the coming months as the conflict continues.
