The Florida Bar has denied that it is investigating Lindsey Halligan, reversing earlier indications that a probe into her conduct was underway.

In a clarification issued to US media, a spokesperson for the Florida Bar said a previous letter suggesting that Halligan was under investigation had been sent in error.

The statement appeared to contradict a February letter the bar had sent to the watchdog group Campaign for Accountability, which had filed a complaint alleging that Halligan violated professional standards during her time in government.

The February correspondence indicated that the bar had been monitoring concerns regarding Halligan’s work and stated that an investigation was already pending. However, the organisation later withdrew the letter and said the information contained in it was inaccurate.

Halligan previously served as interim US attorney during the administration of Donald Trump and had earlier worked as one of his personal lawyers.

Her tenure as US attorney drew controversy after several criminal cases were filed against individuals who had publicly criticized Trump.

Those charged included former James Comey, Letitia James and former national security adviser John Bolton.

All three defendants denied wrongdoing and argued that the prosecutions were politically motivated.

The cases later faced legal challenges, with courts ruling that Halligan’s appointment had not complied with legal requirements governing interim US attorneys.

A judge subsequently dismissed some of the charges, concluding that Halligan had been unlawfully appointed because she had not been confirmed by the US Senate.

Halligan stepped down from the role on January 20 after mounting legal, political pressure.

Following the Florida Bar’s latest clarification, the Campaign for Accountability questioned why no investigation was being pursued despite concerns raised by judges about Halligan’s conduct.

Republican officials, however, welcomed the bar’s decision, with James Uthmeier and Pam Bondi defending Halligan, dismissing the allegations against her.
