The administration of President Donald Trump has announced the commencement of a joint military operation with Ecuador aimed at tackling what it described as “designated terrorist organisations” linked to drug trafficking.
The US Southern Command, which oversees military operations in Central and South America, said Ecuadorian and US forces began coordinated activities on March 3.
General Francis Donovan, head of the command, stated that the collaboration reflects regional efforts to combat what he termed narco-terrorism. Video footage released by US authorities showed military helicopters taking off and aerial surveillance images, though specific operational details were not disclosed.
The White House confirmed the development, with Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt describing the action as part of broader efforts to address criminal networks operating in the hemisphere.
US media reports indicated that American involvement is currently focused on logistical and intelligence support for Ecuadorian forces. However, the full scope of the mission has not been publicly outlined.
Since returning to office for a second term, President Trump has designated several drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations and adopted a more militarised approach to anti-narcotics operations. Officials say dozens of aerial strikes have been carried out against suspected drug-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean in recent months.
The joint operation follows a meeting in Quito between General Donovan and Ecuadorian President, Daniel Noboa. Noboa has prioritized security measures in response to rising violence and organized crime in the country.
Ecuador has experienced an increase in homicides and criminal activity in recent years, which authorities attribute to the expansion of transnational drug networks and economic challenges following the COVID-19 pandemic.
President Noboa said his government was entering a “new phase” in efforts to combat drug trafficking and illegal mining, emphasizing that national security remains a priority.
Observers say further details are expected regarding the extent of US involvement and the legal framework guiding the operation.
