Panic gripped residents on Saturday after fire broke out at a popular filling station known as Oransonic Station, destroying property, forcing occupants of nearby buildings to flee.

Eyewitnesses said the fire appeared to have started around the main underground petroleum discharge tank while a fuel-laden truck was offloading its content, raising fears of a possible explosion.

At the early stage of the incident, no firefighters were reportedly on ground, as staff of the station and some residents made frantic efforts to contain the blaze.

A passer-by who identified herself simply as Mama Uzor said the fire started suddenly during the discharge process.

“We just saw the fire at the filling station popularly known as Oransonic Station. The fire suddenly started when a truck loaded with fuel was being opened for discharge,” she said.

Sources at the scene described it as a “black Saturday” for the station, as the inferno destroyed all four pumping units. The fire also affected the station building, adjoining shops and a nearby prayer house.

Residents said the truck conveying the fuel caught fire, immediately ignited flames that spread across the premises, destroying equipment and other property.

As of the time of filing this report, no casualty had been officially confirmed. However, residents and passers-by reportedly mobilised quickly to help contain the fire before it spread further.

When contacted on Sunday, the Media Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, led by Chukwudi Chiketa, said it would make enquiries and provide further details on the incident.
