Norway’s King Harald, 89, will be discharged from hospital on Thursday after falling ill during a private holiday in Spain, the royal palace said.
The monarch, regarded as Europe’s oldest serving head of state, was admitted to hospital on Tuesday on the island of Tenerife. According to the palace, he was treated for a skin infection on his leg as well as dehydration.
King Harald and Queen Sonja will continue their private stay in Tenerife following his discharge. The palace said no decision has yet been taken regarding their return to Norway.
The king’s personal physician will remain in Tenerife for a few days to monitor his condition.
King Harald has faced a number of health challenges in recent years but has continued to carry out his constitutional duties as Norway’s head of state.
