A police officer has been killed following a bomb explosion near a major train station in Moscow on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The blast occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday near the Savyolovsky Railway Station, one of the busiest rail hubs in the Russian capital.

According to Russia’s Interior Ministry, an unidentified attacker approached traffic police officers seated inside a patrol vehicle before an explosive device detonated. The explosion killed one officer and the attacker, while two other officers sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.

Russia’s Investigative Committee of Russia said it had opened a criminal case for the attempted murder of law enforcement officers and the illegal possession of explosive devices. Authorities have yet to disclose the identity of the suspect or a possible motive.

Images released by the Russian Investigative Committee showed a heavily damaged patrol vehicle with shattered windows and debris scattered across the roadway. Officials confirmed that despite the impact of the blast, the vehicle did not catch fire.

Security has been heightened in parts of the capital following the incident, which comes amid a series of recent attacks in Moscow. Earlier this month, a senior Russian military intelligence officer was reportedly shot and seriously wounded in an incident authorities attributed to Ukraine.

In December 2025, a car bomb explosion killed Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, a senior official within Russia’s General Staff. Days later, another explosion claimed three lives, including two police officers, in the same city.

The latest attack coincides with the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale military operation in Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022. Investigations into Tuesday’s explosion are ongoing.
