As a new round of nuclear talks with the United States approaches in Geneva, Iran has reaffirmed its commitment towards a diplomatic resolution while warning that it will respond forcefully to any military action.

Spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baghaei, said any US attack, even a limited strike, would be seen as an “act of aggression” and would trigger a defensive response. This comes after US President Donald Trump indicated he is considering a limited strike if no deal is reached.

Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian described recent nuclear talks as producing “encouraging signals”, however emphasized that Tehran is prepared for all outcomes. The third round of indirect negotiations, mediated by Oman, is scheduled for Thursday in Geneva, with US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner attending, and Iran led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Baghaei dismissed speculation about any temporary agreement, stressing that Iran has never capitulated in negotiations and maintains clear positions on its nuclear program and sanctions relief. He noted that productive outcomes require seriousness and goodwill from both sides.

Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Tehran, Tohid Asadi, described a cautious atmosphere in Iran, reflecting both optimism for diplomacy and preparedness for regional confrontation amid the largest US military build-up in the Middle East since 2003.

Iran’s statements signal a balance between diplomatic engagement and military readiness as the nuclear talks continue.
