Former Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has commended Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for what he described as purposeful and people-centred leadership that is repositioning the state for sustainable growth and prosperity.

Osinbajo gave the commendation on Wednesday during a visit to Governor Otti in Umuahia, coinciding with the Governor’s birthday.

“I am extremely proud of the work you have done so far. You have lived up to expectations, not only to the people but also to your friends and associates. In the short time I have been here, I have seen tangible evidence of progress,” Osinbajo said.

The former Vice President noted that the true essence of public service lies in making meaningful differences in the lives of citizens. He particularly praised Otti’s social welfare reforms, including his assent to the Senior Citizens’ Law, describing the initiative as exemplary and rooted in compassion.

According to him, effective welfare systems are built on care for the vulnerable and the elderly, adding that such policies reflect responsible governance.

Osinbajo also lauded the administration’s road infrastructure renewal and improved connectivity across the state, describing the projects as visible evidence of results-driven leadership.

Reflecting on leadership, he observed that while many aspire to public office, true distinction lies in fulfilling promises made to the people.

“Sometimes you wonder whether, after all the efforts to get into office, leaders are able to fulfil their promises. But in your case, you have done not just what you promised, but even more. You have made public service worthwhile,” he said.

He prayed for renewed strength, wisdom, and divine favour for Governor Otti as he continues to steer the affairs of the state.

In his response, Otti described Osinbajo as a brother, friend, and mentor, expressing appreciation for the visit and kind words.

The Governor clarified that the gathering was not a planned birthday celebration but merely an acknowledgment of the day, noting that he rarely celebrates birthdays publicly, especially while in office.

He thanked well-wishers who attended voluntarily and reiterated his commitment to modesty and service-focused leadership.

Otti expressed gratitude to God for what he described as modest but impactful achievements recorded in 32 months in office. He stressed that governance must remain centred on the welfare, safety, and peace of mind of the people.

“Governance is about the people — their welfare, their safety and their peace of mind. If you enter office for any other reason, you miss the essence of leadership,” Otti said.

He recalled that upon assumption of office, some local government areas were under the control of non-state actors, adding that decisive actions taken within the first month restored order and reopened previously inaccessible communities.

Otti also commended security agencies for their role in maintaining peace and stability across the state.

“We are grateful to the men and women who stay awake so that our people can sleep in peace,” he said.

Earlier, Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, on behalf of the State Executive Council, extended birthday wishes to the Governor, praying for continued strength and fruitful years.

Representatives of financial institutions, including Access Bank, First Bank, and UBA, described Otti as a model of ethical leadership, noting that his administration has become a benchmark for effective governance in the state.
