The Abia State Government has announced plans to begin the payment of outstanding salary arrears owed to former Local Government Councillors who served between 1999 and 2022.
Governor Alex Otti made the disclosure on Sunday during a meeting with members of the Association of Former Elected Councillors in Umuahia.
The Governor said the arrears, which accumulated under previous administrations, would be settled in batches, with payments set to commence before the end of the month.
He explained that when the issue was first presented to him, he was not fully aware of the complexities involved, including ongoing court cases. However, he stressed that his administration is committed towards resolving inherited challenges, noting that leadership is about stewardship and problem-solving.
Governor Otti stated that all government workers, whether core or non-core civil servants, including pensioners deserve equal treatment and prompt payment of their entitlements.
He commended the Association for withdrawing its court cases over the unpaid salaries, describing the move as a step toward reconciliation and confidence-building.
According to him, the government has harmonized all outstanding matters, including those previously subject to court orders, to ensure a smooth payment process.
The Governor assured the former councillors of fairness and equal treatment, regardless of political affiliation, directed relevant officials to formalize the Association’s structure.
In separate remarks, the lawmaker representing Isiala Ngwa North and South Constituency, Chief Ginger Onwusibe, and the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Mr. Austin Meregini, praised the Governor’s inclusive approach.
Also speaking, the National Secretary of the Labour Party, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, commended the state government’s decision and encouraged the councillors to support the Otti-led administration.
