The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, has resigned from his position.

Although the exact reason for his resignation has not been officially stated, the development comes amid reports of a petition submitted by members of the NAHCON board to President Bola Tinubu, calling for his removal over alleged misconduct and abuse of office.

Confirming the resignation, the Technical Assistant on Media to the NAHCON chairman, Ahmad Mu’azu, said Prof. Usman had communicated his decision to resign but did not provide details on the circumstances surrounding it.

“Yes, he has resigned, but I am still waiting for him to communicate his reasons, because he just sent a one-line message to us last night, informing us of his resignation. I think proper communication will be done this morning,” Mu’azu said.

Sources said the board’s action followed what it described as prolonged internal observations and repeated attempts at corrective engagement, noting that persistent leadership failures had allegedly undermined the credibility, stability, and operational effectiveness of the commission.

In a petition dated January 19, 2026, and signed by 11 board members, entitled Vote of No Confidence in the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Prof. Abdullahi Saleh Usman, the board accused the chairman of financial indiscipline, lack of transparency, and repeated expenditure of funds and award of contracts without board approval, allegedly in excess of approved budgetary limits.

Before his resignation, Prof. Usman’s last official engagement occurred last week when he received Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, in Abuja.

Prof. Usman was appointed Chairman of NAHCON by President Bola Tinubu in 2024.
