Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has warned that local government chairmen who fail to deliver victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in their respective councils in the 2027 elections will lose their positions.
Nwifuru issued the warning while inaugurating the newly elected chairmen and vice-chairmen of the state’s 13 local government areas.
The governor said the council bosses would be held directly responsible for the APC’s performance in their areas, directing them to work towards delivering a 100 per cent vote for the ruling party.
“Any chairman who fails to win his council will be removed from office and replaced with a councillor. I want this information to be on the headlines of newspapers because, as politicians, we would not speak in secret,” Nwifuru said.
He warned that chairmen who fail to mobilise voters for the APC or allow opposition parties to gain ground would face the consequences.
Nwifuru also urged the council leaders to put aside rivalry with their deputies and maintain effective working relationships to ensure smooth administration.
Addressing the vice-chairmen, he charged them to support their principals while remaining prepared to take charge when necessary, likening them to “spare tyres inside the car boot.”
The governor cited the political rise of his deputy, who previously served as a local government chairperson, as an example of how effective grassroots leadership could open the door to higher office.
Responding on behalf of the newly inaugurated chairmen, Afikpo LGA Chairman Timothy Nwachi pledged their commitment to delivering a landslide victory for the APC in 2027.
Among those inaugurated were Osborne Umahi, son of Minister of Works David Umahi, and Chidi Nwode, brother of the governor’s wife.
