The Coordinating Bishop of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Province of the Niger, Rt. Rev. Dr Samuel Ezeofor, has warned President Bola Tinubu, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) against actions that could undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections.

Ezeofor, who also serves as Bishop of Aguata and Supervising Bishop of Awka Diocese, raised the concerns during the 2026 Anglican Prayer Rally of Anambra State (APRAS).

He cautioned against political developments that could encourage a one-party system, expressing concern over alleged intimidation of opposition parties and their candidates.

The cleric urged Nigerians to participate actively in the forthcoming elections and hold political leaders accountable through the ballot.

According to him, citizens must remain vigilant and ensure that their votes reflect their political choices.

Ezeofor recalled that the Anglican Province had previously expressed concerns about the possible emergence of a one-party system during its synod in May.

He warned political authorities against disregarding public dissatisfaction, stressing that electoral transparency and respect for voters’ decisions were essential to national stability.

The bishop also expressed concern that unresolved political grievances could increase tensions, although he said he did not wish for unrest.

He called on the Presidency, INEC, political parties and other electoral stakeholders to respect democratic principles and ensure that the outcome of the elections reflected the wishes of voters.

His remarks represented concerns about the forthcoming electoral process rather than evidence that manipulation had occurred.

Addressing internal challenges within the Anglican Communion, Ezeofor acknowledged that recent developments in the church had discouraged some members.

He urged worshippers to remain steadfast in their faith, explaining that difficulties arising from human administration should not weaken their confidence in God.

The bishop expressed optimism that the church would overcome its challenges and emerge stronger.

The prayer rally, themed Dwelling in the Secret Place of the Most High, brought together bishops, clergy and worshippers from dioceses within the Province of the Niger.

Among those present were Bishops Ephraim Ikeakor of Amichi, Prosper Ama of Ogbaru, Obiora Uzochukwu of Niger East and Ndubuisi Obi of Nnewi.

Earlier, Venerable Dr Emma Ezeugo encouraged Christians to devote more time to prayer and spiritual reflection.

The gathering also featured prayers for peace, divine protection and stability in Nigeria.
