The Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has arrested a woman, Iyabo Sowunmi, for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ibara, Abeokuta.
Sowunmi was reportedly trying to deliver the substance to her son, Dare Sowunmi, an inmate said to be on death row at the facility.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Odukoya, disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Monday.
According to Odukoya, the suspect was apprehended at about 1:33 pm on Friday, August 28, 2026, during routine screening at the prison’s main entrance.
He said officers discovered a substance suspected to be “Colos,” a psychoactive synthetic drug, concealed inside a sachet of a popular beverage powder.
Odukoya said the substance was allegedly intended for Dare Sowunmi, prompting officers to detain his mother and subsequently hand her over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command, Abioye Adesina, commended the officers for maintaining vigilance and enforcing the facility’s security protocols.
Adesina reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance policy towards the introduction of drugs and other prohibited items into custodial centres, warning that attempts to compromise security would attract appropriate legal action.
The correctional service urged members of the public to respect the rules governing custodial facilities and warned that anyone involved in activities capable of undermining prison security would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
