The United States government has announced an additional $267 million in funding to support efforts to contain the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The US State Department announced the funding on Wednesday, saying the latest contribution brings Washington’s direct health and humanitarian assistance for the outbreak to $887 million.
“To date, the United States government has provided $887 million in direct health and humanitarian assistance to combat the Ebola outbreak,” the department said in a statement.
The announcement was made on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, where the US also called on other countries with the capacity to increase their contributions to the international response.
The State Department said the appeal was aimed at ensuring that the global response matched the scale and urgency of the outbreak.
The latest funding comes amid continued concerns over the spread of Ebola to additional areas of the DRC.
Outgoing UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had previously appealed for an additional $1.1 billion in funding to support efforts to contain the epidemic.
According to Doctors Without Borders, also known as MSF, the outbreak has continued to spread to new parts of the country.
Congolese public health officials said the outbreak has killed more than 3,600 people and infected about 7,500 others since mid-May, making it the country’s worst recorded Ebola epidemic.
