At least 12 people have been killed and 39 others injured following a Ukrainian drone attack on Nizhnekamsk in Russia’s Tatarstan region, officials said on Monday.
The strike was one of the deadliest single Ukrainian attacks reported inside Russia since the war began, highlighting the growing intensity of long-range attacks between the two countries.
Tatarstan, located more than 1,000 kilometres from the Ukrainian border, is a major energy-producing region and home to several important oil refineries and industrial facilities that have increasingly been targeted by Ukraine.
The regional government said the casualties occurred during a “massive” drone attack on Nizhnekamsk.
Unverified videos shared on social media appeared to show a large plume of dark smoke rising from an industrial facility near the city, although the circumstances and extent of the damage could not be independently verified.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air defence systems intercepted 456 Ukrainian drones overnight but did not disclose how many drones may have reached their intended targets.
Ukraine’s Air Force, meanwhile, said Russia launched 126 drones against Ukrainian targets during its overnight attacks.
The latest exchange comes as both countries have intensified their use of long-range weapons, with the United Nations reporting a significant increase in civilian casualties linked to the escalating attacks.
Meanwhile, five people were killed in a Russian artillery attack on the village of Bugaivka in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, local authorities said.
The regional prosecutor’s office said Russian forces launched a heavy artillery barrage on residential areas of the village on Monday, destroying several homes.
“Five people were killed,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement, adding that a house was reduced to rubble in the attack.
Elsewhere, Ukrainian authorities reported that a woman was killed in a separate Ukrainian attack in Russia’s Belgorod border region.
In Ukraine’s frontline Kherson region, officials said a Russian drone strike on a taxi killed one person.
