Two women and a 9-year-old child who disappeared while tubing on Michigan’s Muskegon River have been found safe, authorities said.

The trio was located Friday afternoon after an extensive search involving Michigan State Police K-9 units and state conservation officers.

According to Michigan State Police, the three were found at about 4:36 p.m., approximately one mile from a boat launch along the Muskegon River.

“This is the outcome everyone hoped for,” the police agency said in a statement.

The two women are both 28 years old, although authorities did not immediately disclose their relationship to the child.

Police also did not release details about the trio’s condition or explain what happened after they went missing.

The search began after a relative discovered a vehicle belonging to one of the women at a separate boat launch. The vehicle had a broken window, prompting the relative to contact authorities.

At the time, the three had been unaccounted for for more than 24 hours, while family members were unable to reach them, police said.

The vehicle was found at a boat launch roughly seven miles northeast of the location where the trio was eventually rescued.

Authorities later recovered two of the group’s inner tubes and footprints on Thursday, providing additional clues during the search.

The operation involved nearly two dozen Michigan State Police posts, law enforcement agencies and other government departments, while volunteers also joined efforts to locate the missing tubers.

Authorities said the search ultimately ended with the safe discovery of all three individuals.
