US President Donald Trump has published his own ranking of what he considers the greatest presidents in American history, placing himself in the top category alongside several of the country’s most historically prominent leaders.
Trump shared the ranking on Thursday, August 27, featuring portraits of 34 of the 45 individuals who have served as president. The presidents were divided into six categories: “the greatest,” “great,” “near great,” “average,” “below average” and “failures.”
Trump placed himself in the “greatest” category, above former presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Thomas Jefferson, who were all placed in the “great” category.
Also listed as “great” were Woodrow Wilson and Andrew Jackson.
The “near great” category included Theodore Roosevelt, Grover Cleveland, John Adams and James K. Polk.
Former President Bill Clinton, whom Trump has repeatedly criticised during his political career, was placed in the “average” category. Other presidents in that category included John Quincy Adams, James Monroe, Rutherford B. Hayes, James Madison, Martin Van Buren, William Howard Taft, Chester A. Arthur, William McKinley, Andrew Johnson, Herbert Hoover and Benjamin Harrison.
Trump placed John Tyler, Calvin Coolidge, Millard Fillmore, Zachary Taylor, James Buchanan and Franklin Pierce in the “below average” category.

Former presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden were placed in the “failures” category, alongside Jimmy Carter, Ulysses S. Grant and Warren G. Harding.
Several other former presidents were not included in the ranking. They were William Henry Harrison, James A. Garfield, Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush.
Trump shared the ranking alongside a CNN video featuring data journalist Harry Enten discussing a poll on presidential admiration among Republican voters.

The poll, as referenced in the video, indicated that Trump was more admired among Republicans than Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan.
Trump’s ranking has drawn attention because of his decision to place himself in the highest category while assigning several historically prominent presidents to lower categories.
The ranking does not represent an official historical assessment of US presidents and reflects Trump’s personal evaluation of the individuals included.
