US President, Donald Trump has declared that any resolution with Islamic Republic of Iran must involve the country’s “unconditional surrender,” signaling maximalist war objectives as the conflict intensifies across the region. Trump emphasized on social media that the US and its allies would work to rebuild Iran under a “great and acceptable leader” once surrender is secured.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian confirmed ongoing diplomatic mediation but stressed Iran’s readiness to defend itself. The conflict has already spread across the Middle East, sparking Iranian strikes throughout the Gulf, escalating fighting between Hezbollah and Israel, and triggering mass displacement in Lebanon.
Iranian missile and drone attacks have targeted US and regional assets, while Tehran has largely succeeded in closing the Strait of Hormuz, causing a global spike in oil prices. Iranian officials remain defiant, warning they are prepared for a prolonged conflict and potential US ground invasion.
US attempts to project dominance reference past actions in Venezuela, with Trump suggesting he may influence the selection of Khamenei’s successor to install a leader favorable to US and Israeli interests. Iran’s leadership transition is traditionally overseen by the Assembly of Experts, an 88-member council tasked with selecting the new supreme leader, who must be a Shia Muslim religious scholar.
The war has already claimed at least 1,332 lives in Iran, including 181 children, with the deadliest strike hitting a girls’ school in Minab at the start of the conflict. Iranian diplomats continue to condemn US-Israeli strikes and warn of retaliation for civilian casualties.
