Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled an attempted attack by suspected ISWAP fighters on a military base in Borno State, killed 16 insurgents in a follow-up counter-offensive, the military said on Tuesday.
According to a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force (North East), Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the terrorists attempted to overrun the Forward Operating Base in Auno around midnight on February 5.
Troops of Sector 1, however, thwarted the assault after what the military described as an exchange of fire, forcing the attackers to retreat.
Days later, on February 9, troops in collaboration with members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) launched a counter-offensive along the Komala axis in Konduga Local Government Area.
The pursuit extended to the Gidan Kaji axis, where 16 insurgents were reportedly killed, while several others escaped with injuries.
The military said troops recovered over 20 bicycles, weapons and a cache of logistics supplies believed to support terrorist operations.
In a related operation the same day, troops arrested suspected ISWAP logistics suppliers along the Bukarti axis. The suspects were allegedly transporting a large quantity of drugs believed to be meant for insurgents.
Meanwhile, troops also foiled a kidnapping attempt along the Buratai–Kamuya road after detecting suspicious movements. The suspected kidnappers reportedly abandoned two victims identified as Mallam Idris Adamu and Mallam Muhammadu Safiyanu and fled into nearby bushes during a pursuit by soldiers.
The victims were later reunited with their families.
Similarly, troops responding to a distress call along the Chibok–Damboa axis rescued nine kidnapped persons on February 9.
The military said the operations form part of ongoing efforts to degrade terrorist capabilities, disrupt supply networks, enhance civilian protection across the North East.
