A powerful earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, sending tremors across parts of the country and neighbouring Ecuador and forcing residents to flee homes and buildings as a precaution.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) and Colombia’s national geological agency recorded the earthquake at magnitude 7.4.
According to the agencies, the relatively deep tremor was centred near San José del Palmar, about 400 kilometres west of the Colombian capital, Bogotá.
The strong shaking was felt in several parts of Colombia, including Cali, where residents were seen leaving buildings following the earthquake.
Authorities had not immediately reported deaths, injuries or major structural damage following the tremor.
The earthquake also affected neighbouring Ecuador, with residents in some areas evacuating buildings after feeling the strong shaking.
Emergency agencies were assessing the situation and monitoring for possible damage or aftershocks.
The latest earthquake comes weeks after Venezuela experienced two major earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5, in late June. Those earthquakes caused extensive destruction and were reported to have killed more than 5,000 people.
Authorities in Colombia and Ecuador are expected to continue assessing the impact of Monday’s earthquake as emergency teams remain on alert for possible aftershocks.
