The Rivers State Police Command has announced the dissolution of its Tactical Teams and the creation of a new specialised outfit, the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), in a move aimed at improving operational efficiency and restoring public trust.
The decision follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and is being implemented under the leadership of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga A. Adepoju.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, all previously existing tactical formations within the command have now been merged into the VCRU. The newly established unit is tasked with responding rapidly to violent crimes while maintaining strict adherence to professional standards and respect for human rights.
Police authorities say the restructuring is part of broader reforms within the Nigeria Police Force aimed at promoting accountability and enhancing service delivery.
“The unit is designed to ensure swift and decisive responses to security threats without compromising the rights of citizens,” the statement noted.
The command also issued a stern warning to officers against extortion, abuse of office, and other forms of misconduct. It emphasised that any breach of the Force’s code of conduct would attract disciplinary measures.
Commissioner Adepoju reassured residents of the state of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, urging the public to support law enforcement efforts by reporting suspicious activities and unprofessional behaviour.
To strengthen accountability, the police provided dedicated emergency and complaint lines, including those of the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) and the Control Room, for citizens to report incidents or misconduct.
The development comes amid ongoing nationwide efforts to reform policing practices and improve community relations, particularly in response to longstanding concerns over the conduct of tactical units.
