Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has praised midfielder Romeo Lavia after the Belgian completed his first full match in more than two years during the club’s pre-season victory over AC Milan.
The 22-year-old was one of only four Chelsea players to remain on the pitch for the entire 90 minutes as the Blues secured a 3-0 win over AC Milan at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Central Jakarta, Indonesia, on Saturday.
Lavia played a key role in the middle of the pitch, helping Chelsea control possession and disrupt Milan’s attempts to establish a rhythm.

Joao Pedro put Chelsea ahead shortly before half-time when he headed the ball past Milan goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani from close range.
The Brazilian striker doubled Chelsea’s advantage less than a minute after the restart, finishing from inside the six-yard box.
Moises Caicedo then completed the scoring with an impressive volley from outside the penalty area, using the outside of his foot to beat the Milan goalkeeper.
Although Lavia did not get on the scoresheet, his contribution in midfield was significant as Chelsea maintained control of the game.
He completed the match alongside Robert Sanchez, Josh Acheampong and Marco Palestra.
The appearance was particularly significant for Lavia, as it was his first full 90-minute outing since August 4, 2024, when Chelsea played Manchester City in a pre-season fixture.
Following the victory, Alonso expressed his satisfaction with the midfielder’s progress and ability to complete the game.
Speaking to Chelsea’s club media, the Spanish coach said: “I am very happy with him because he has a break, a block,” while gesturing towards his head.

Alonso acknowledged that Lavia was visibly tired towards the end of the encounter but said he wanted the midfielder to experience the full match.
“He was fatigued, but I told him, ‘Let him play, let him enjoy the 90 minutes.’ He finished the match exhausted, so I believe he is truly happy,” Alonso added.
The outing represents an important step in Lavia’s return to regular football as Chelsea continue preparations for the new season.
