The Osun State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly spreading false information on social media claiming that bandits had invaded parts of the state.

The command said the suspect was apprehended after publishing a video on his Facebook account which falsely suggested that armed bandits were operating within the state, triggering fear and anxiety among residents.

In a statement issued on Friday in Osogbo, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said the suspect’s actions violated provisions of the Cybercrimes Act, 2015, and other applicable laws relating to the dissemination of false information.

According to Ojelabi, preliminary investigations revealed that the video shared by the suspect did not depict a bandit attack as claimed.

“The footage actually showed members of the public restraining an individual suffering from a mental health condition,” he explained.

He noted that the misleading post quickly gained attention online and caused unnecessary panic among residents who believed the state was under threat from armed criminals.

The police spokesperson disclosed that the suspect was arrested on Wednesday and questioned over the publication.

However, he was later released following appeals made by his elderly parents.

According to the command, the young man has since issued a public apology for his actions and expressed regret over the misinformation.

Police authorities also cautioned him against engaging in similar conduct in the future.

The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Ibrahim Gotan, used the opportunity to warn members of the public against sharing unverified information capable of creating fear, panic or public disorder.

He stressed the importance of verifying information before posting it online, particularly on security-related matters.

Gotan reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating the spread of false information and maintaining public safety.

“The command will not tolerate the misuse of social media platforms to spread misinformation capable of undermining public peace and security,” the statement said.

The police urged residents to rely on credible sources for information and to report suspicious activities through official security channels rather than circulating unverified claims online.
