The Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State has rejected claims questioning the eligibility of its governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, for the 2027 election.
The party was responding to claims attributed to the Ogun Democratic Accountability Forum, which questioned whether Adebutu’s name was properly captured in the PDP membership register submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission.
In a statement issued in Abeokuta, PDP Publicity Secretary, Kayode Adebayo, described the allegations as unfounded and politically motivated.
“Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu remains a fully registered, financially active and undisputed leader of the PDP in Ogun State,” Adebayo said.
The party maintained that it had complied with requirements governing membership registration and submission of its register to INEC, arguing that there was no basis to challenge Adebutu’s eligibility.
It also alleged that the controversy was an attempt by political opponents to create uncertainty around his candidacy ahead of the election.
The PDP further raised questions about the political history of APC governorship candidate, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, including his previous representation of Lagos State before moving his political activities to Ogun.
It also made allegations concerning the location of some federal constituency projects linked to Adeola and called for greater public scrutiny of the projects.
On the legal arguments surrounding Adebutu’s eligibility, the PDP maintained that qualification for election was governed by the Constitution, Electoral Act and applicable judicial decisions.
“Political eligibility is determined by the Constitution, the Electoral Act and applicable judicial authorities. It cannot be established or extinguished by press statements issued by politically aligned groups,” the party said.
The PDP urged INEC to disregard what it described as attempts to create uncertainty around Adebutu’s candidacy and maintained that his nomination remained valid.
Adebutu formally began his 2027 Ogun governorship campaign earlier in September, unveiling an economic and social development programme tagged “ITURA DE.”
