A supporter was reportedly shot dead while several others sustained injuries following a violent clash during the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives primary election in the Ikotun area of Lagos State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday at a primary school in the Ile-Iwe area of Egbe, where party members had gathered for the primary election exercise.

According to reports, the exercise initially progressed peacefully before tensions escalated after an argument allegedly broke out among supporters of rival political interests at the venue.

The disagreement was said to have quickly degenerated into chaos, forcing party members, delegates and residents around the area to flee for safety.

Eyewitnesses said gunshots were later heard during the confusion, leaving one person fatally wounded and several others injured.

A resident familiar with the incident disclosed that panic spread across the area as people scrambled to escape the violence.

“The exercise was moving on normally before arguments started among supporters. The situation later became chaotic and people began running. Gunshots were then heard and one person was hit while others sustained injuries,” the source said.

Another resident identified simply as Taofeek said many people reportedly jumped fences and sought shelter in nearby buildings after the gunshots rang out.

“We suddenly saw people shouting and running. There was confusion everywhere because many did not know what had happened initially. Later we heard that someone had been shot and others were injured,” he said.

Sources further stated that the victim was rushed from the scene for medical attention but reportedly died before reaching the hospital.

A police source disclosed that additional security personnel were deployed to the area after the violence broke out, while senior officers moved in to restore calm.

The source, however, did not confirm whether any arrests had been made in connection with the incident.

As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the development, while party officials were yet to publicly react to the incident.

Political violence has remained a recurring concern during party primaries and elections across the country, with clashes among supporters frequently resulting in injuries, fatalities and disruption of electoral activities.
