The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed 10,210 personnel and specialised tactical units across Osun State ahead of the governorship election.
The Commandant-General of the NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, ordered the deployment as part of measures to strengthen security and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the Corps’ National Public Relations Officer, Babawale Afolabi, said the operation was designed to protect voters, electoral officials, observers, journalists and other residents throughout the election.
Personnel from the NSCDC commands in Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Ogun, Lagos, Kwara, Edo, Kogi, Delta and the Federal Capital Territory are expected to reinforce the Osun State Command. About 1,000 personnel from each of the participating commands will be deployed as part of the wider security arrangement.
Audi also approved the deployment of specialised formations with capabilities tailored to the security requirements of the election.
The units include the Commandant-General’s Special Intelligence Squad, Special Weapons and Tactics Unit, Specialised Female Squad, Mining Marshals, Special Strike Force, Crack Squad and K9 Unit.
According to the Corps, the specialised teams will support intelligence gathering, crime prevention, protection of critical infrastructure, crowd management and other election-related security responsibilities.
To strengthen coordination, the Deputy Commandant-General in charge of Operations, Ayuba Phillip, alongside designated Assistant Commandants-General and other senior officers, will relocate to Osun State to supervise the NSCDC’s election operations.
Audi assured residents that the Corps would remain professional, impartial and respectful of citizens’ rights throughout the electoral process.
He stressed that protecting electoral materials, officials and voters was essential to ensuring a credible election.
The Commandant-General warned political thugs and other individuals planning to disrupt the election that the NSCDC would not tolerate activities capable of undermining the electoral process.
He said anyone found attempting to cause violence or interfere with the election would face the full force of the law in accordance with the Electoral Act.
Audi urged political parties, candidates, supporters and residents to maintain peace and allow voters to exercise their democratic rights without intimidation.
The NSCDC said it would continue to work with the Nigeria Police Force, military and other security agencies under the established inter-agency framework to maintain security across all 30 local government areas of Osun State.
The Corps also called on residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities or security threats to the appropriate authorities.
