President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said Nigeria’s new tax reforms will create opportunities, boost investment, and deliver shared prosperity, replacing what he described as outdated colonial-era tax laws that weakened the economy.

The President made this known on Tuesday in Abuja during the commissioning of the 16-storey headquarters of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), an event attended by top government officials, lawmakers, governors, and private sector leaders.

According to Tinubu, the old tax regime was characterised by fragmentation, multiplicity, and inconsistencies, which limited economic growth and impoverished citizens. He stated that the newly introduced system, which became fully operational in January 2026, is designed to be people-centred, transparent, and investment-friendly.

“We are moving from a system that shared limited wealth to one that creates opportunities and prosperity. Our reforms are aimed at building an economy anchored on discipline, equity, and growth,” the President said.

He noted that the reforms are part of a broader effort to strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal foundation, improve revenue generation, and restore confidence in public institutions.

Tinubu also commended the Executive Chairman of the NRS, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, for overseeing the completion of the headquarters building, which had been under development for over two decades but was completed within 30 months under the current administration. The facility is expected to accommodate about 3,000 staff and includes modern infrastructure such as a data centre, training facilities, clinic, and library.

Highlighting the impact of the reforms, the President said early indicators point to improved fiscal stability, stronger foreign reserves, enhanced trade efficiency, and increased investor confidence.

He assured Nigerians that the reforms are not aimed at increasing tax burdens but at simplifying the system, eliminating inefficiencies, and ensuring fairness, particularly for vulnerable groups.

“The goal is to build a revenue system that rewards enterprise, supports growth, and ensures accountability. Every contribution must translate into tangible value for the people,” Tinubu added.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in his remarks, urged Nigerians to remain patient, noting that the administration’s economic reforms are already yielding results, including improved fuel availability and increased domestic production.

Similarly, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, said the reforms have addressed longstanding challenges of fragmented tax structures and weak coordination, replacing them with a more coherent and efficient system.

In his welcome address, NRS Executive Chairman, Dr. Adedeji, described the reforms as one of the most significant in Nigeria’s history, revealing that over 60 fragmented tax laws had been streamlined into a unified framework to enhance compliance and efficiency.

He disclosed that Nigeria’s revenue collection grew from N6.8 trillion five years ago to N28.7 trillion in 2025, attributing the increase to improved fiscal governance and modernised systems such as the National Single Window for trade.

The commissioning of the NRS headquarters, officials noted, symbolizes a renewed commitment to transparency, efficiency, and institutional strengthening as Nigeria seeks long-term economic stability and growth.
