The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has clarified the meaning of the different admission statuses displayed on its Central Admissions Processing System, warning candidates that “Admission in Progress” does not automatically mean they have secured admission.
JAMB clarified on Thursday as admission processes continue across tertiary institutions, explaining the differences between “Not Admitted,” “Admission in Progress” and “Admitted” on candidates’ CAPS profiles.
The Board urged candidates not to panic when their status reads “Not Admitted,” saying it only indicates that an admission offer has not been made at that stage.
According to JAMB, the status does not necessarily mean the candidate will ultimately be denied admission, as it could change while institutions continue processing their admission lists.
Candidates with the status were therefore advised to regularly check CAPS for updates.
WHAT ‘ADMISSION IN PROGRESS’ MEANS
JAMB explained that “Admission in Progress” may appear when an institution’s admission officer has proposed a candidate for admission but is awaiting the recommendation of the head of the institution.
The same status may also appear after the institution has recommended the candidate, but the admission is awaiting JAMB’s final approval or rejection.
The Board cautioned candidates against treating the status as confirmation of admission.
It explained that a recommended candidate could still be denied admission if JAMB determines that the person has failed to satisfy the requirements.
WHEN ADMISSION BECOMES OFFICIAL
According to JAMB, admission becomes official when the Board approves the institution’s recommendation, and the candidate’s CAPS status changes to “Admitted.”
At that stage, the candidate receives a notification confirming that an admission offer has been made and is provided with the option to accept or reject the offer through CAPS.
JAMB said candidates should expect their CAPS status to change at different stages of the process until admission is concluded and an admission letter can be printed.
The Board advised admission seekers to continue monitoring their CAPS profiles and rely on official information regarding their admission status.
