Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to meet mediators in New York as efforts intensify to find a diplomatic path towards ending the conflict between Iran and the United States.
The talks are expected to involve Qatari mediators, who are also likely to hold separate discussions with the United States on Monday or Tuesday.
An official briefed on the negotiations said the latest diplomatic effort would focus on an amended version of a seven-day proposal presented by Iran on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Iranian media reported that no US representative would participate directly in Araghchi’s meeting with the mediators.
The development follows Washington’s rejection of Tehran’s latest proposal concerning an end to the fighting and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite the rejection, mediators have continued working with both governments in an attempt to establish terms acceptable to Washington and Tehran.
Araghchi has maintained that Iran remains open to diplomacy while warning that Tehran is prepared to respond if hostilities intensify.
US President Donald Trump has also indicated that he expects further discussions involving Iran this week as diplomatic contacts continue alongside the military confrontation.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, said Iranian forces had pushed what he described as “enemy forces” away from waters off southern Iran towards the Arabian Sea.
Khamenei further claimed that those forces would eventually be pushed out of the Arabian Sea. His statements represented Iran’s account of the military situation and were not independently established by the reports reviewed.
The diplomatic activity is unfolding amid continued security concerns beyond the Middle East.
British authorities said five UK nationals arrested near RAF Fairford, a British airbase used by US forces, had been released on bail while remaining under investigation.
The men had been arrested on suspicion of terrorism and explosives-related offences. British counter-terrorism authorities said investigations were continuing, including into whether individuals could have been acting on behalf of a foreign state.
Iran has denied involvement in the incident.
The latest developments leave diplomatic negotiations and military tensions running simultaneously, with mediators continuing efforts to narrow the differences between Washington and Tehran.
