The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old man, Bright Adiene, over his alleged involvement in the suspected cult-related murder of Nnamdi Okeke in Owerri, the state capital.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday, October 18, by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Henry Okoye.

According to the police spokesperson, the killing was reported to the command on Saturday, October 17, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Okoye disclosed that Adiene remained in police custody while security operatives intensified efforts to apprehend another suspect identified as Anyima, who is also being sought in connection with the killing.

The police said investigations were continuing to establish the circumstances of Okeke’s death and determine the identities and roles of everyone involved.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, convened a strategic security meeting with Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Team Commanders on Sunday.

The meeting focused on assessing the security situation across Imo State and strengthening measures to prevent further violence.

Bosso directed operational commanders to intensify intelligence-led policing, conduct targeted raids on suspected criminal hideouts and increase patrols in areas identified as security hotspots.

He also instructed officers to respond promptly to emerging threats and strengthen collaboration with community leaders, youth organisations and other stakeholders to improve intelligence gathering.

The police commissioner urged parents and guardians to pay closer attention to their children’s activities and associations, particularly those that could expose them to cult-related violence.

He warned that individuals found responsible for criminal activities would face prosecution in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, the command appealed to residents to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding while cooperating with security agencies during ongoing investigations.

Members of the public with relevant information were encouraged to report to the nearest police station or contact the command through 0803 477 3600.

Although police suspect a cult-related motive, the circumstances of the killing remain under investigation, and Adiene has not been convicted of any offence.
