The Federal University of Lafia, Nasarawa State, says it has recorded progress in tackling kidnapping, cultism and other criminal activities in communities where many of its students reside.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mohammed Isa Kida, disclosed this on Monday during an interaction with journalists at the university’s conference hall in Lafia.
Kida attributed the development to collaboration between the university and security agencies, including the police, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the military.
“We partnered with the security agencies including the Police, DSS, Civil Defence and the military to address the recurring cases of insecurity bedevilling communities around the university,” he said.
According to Kida, the university has also engaged more than 150 vigilantes and nearly 50 hunters to support security agencies through intelligence gathering and other security assistance.
He said more than 200 people were currently receiving stipends from the university for supporting security operations around student communities, including Mararaba and Akunza.
“They are not really enough, but they are seriously doing that magic for us,” he said.
Kida appealed to journalists in Nasarawa State to support efforts to expose those involved in kidnapping, cultism and other criminal activities.
“I am soliciting support from the media in our struggle and fight against this incessant security menace bedevilling communities around the university,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the impact of kidnapping on students and their families, particularly when victims are held for ransom.
“Imagine a child is writing his exams and he is kidnapped, and ransom is demanded that not even the parents can raise the money, not even the university can pay the money,” he said.
Kida said protecting students and staff from kidnapping, cultism and other criminal activities remained a priority of his administration.
