Four persons have lost their lives while another sustained injuries in a fatal road accident along the Ibadan-Lagos route in Ogun State.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at Straight Gate, with the Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC) confirming that the crash happened at about 4 a.m.
According to the Ogun State Sector Command of the FRSC, eight persons were involved in the accident.
Four male adults were confirmed dead, one male adult sustained injuries, while three other persons escaped the crash without injuries.
Two vehicles were involved in the collision — a blue Mitsubishi Cabstar with registration number FGE 753 XA and an ash-coloured HOWO truck with registration number T-695 KT.
Preliminary findings by the FRSC identified excessive speed and wrongful overtaking as major factors in the accident.
The Corps said the Mitsubishi driver was allegedly travelling at high speed when the vehicle collided with the moving truck during an attempt to overtake.
Fatigue was also identified as a contributing factor, with preliminary findings indicating that the driver was fatigued during the journey.
FRSC RESPONDS WITHIN SIX MINUTES
Providing details of the emergency response, the FRSC said its rescue team received information about the crash at approximately 4:33 a.m.
Officials arrived at the accident scene at about 4:39 a.m., representing a response time of approximately six minutes.
The injured victim was rescued from the scene and taken to Victory Hospital in Ogere, where he received medical attention.
The bodies of the four deceased persons were subsequently taken to the FOS Mortuary in Ipara.
Following the completion of rescue operations, the two vehicles involved in the accident were handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division, MTD, Isara Division, for further investigation and necessary action.
FRSC WARNS AGAINST SPEEDING, FATIGUE
Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, warned motorists against excessive speed, driving while fatigued and engaging in unsafe overtaking.
Ogunjobi particularly cautioned motorists travelling during the early hours of the morning to exercise greater care, noting the risks associated with fatigue during long-distance journeys.
“Motorists must avoid speeding, fatigue and unsafe overtaking, especially during early-morning journeys. Drivers are advised to take adequate rest before embarking on long-distance trips and to overtake only when it is safe and permissible to do so,” he said.
The Sector Commander also urged motorists embarking on long journeys to ensure they have sufficient rest before setting out and to avoid continuing their journeys when experiencing fatigue.
He stressed that overtaking should only be attempted when road and traffic conditions make the manoeuvre safe and permissible.
The FRSC reiterated the need for motorists to observe traffic regulations and prioritise safety while using Nigerian roads.
The Corps also advised drivers against allowing pressure to reach their destinations quickly to result in excessive speed or other unsafe driving practices.
Wednesday’s accident has again drawn attention to the dangers associated with speeding, fatigue and improper overtaking, particularly during early-morning and long-distance journeys.
