Matheus Cunha scored a dramatic late equaliser as Manchester United fought back to secure a 1-1 draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
United appeared headed for a third consecutive defeat after Lisandro Martínez’s own goal gave Fulham the lead in the 63rd minute, but Cunha struck in the 89th minute to rescue a point for the visitors.
The first half ended goalless, with both sides unable to convert their opportunities before the contest opened up after the interval.
Fulham broke the deadlock when Martínez inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, handing the hosts a valuable advantage as they searched for their first Premier League victory of the season.
Manchester United increased the pressure as the match entered its closing stages and eventually found a breakthrough.
Cunha received the ball following an involvement from substitute Patrick Dorgu and fired a low effort towards goal. His shot took a significant deflection off Fulham defender David Affengruber before beating goalkeeper Bernd Leno and finding the bottom corner.
The equaliser sparked a late push from United as they attempted to complete the comeback during three minutes of added time.
The visitors won two late corners, with Martínez having a shot blocked before Dorgu headed another opportunity wide.
United had earlier appealed for a penalty after Martínez’s effort struck the arm of Fulham defender Calvin Bassey inside the area.
The Video Assistant Referee reviewed the incident but determined that Bassey’s arm was not in an unnatural position, and no penalty was awarded.
United registered 25 attempts during the contest and won 11 corners but struggled to turn their attacking pressure into clear-cut goalscoring opportunities.
Luke Shaw also made his 300th Premier League appearance before being replaced by Dorgu late in the second half.
The result leaves Fulham still searching for their first league victory of the season, while Manchester United avoided suffering three consecutive defeats.
Cunha’s late intervention ensured the visitors left Craven Cottage with a point after another demanding Premier League encounter.
