The United States military has confirmed that a small number of its forces have been deployed to Nigeria as part of enhanced security cooperation between both countries.

The disclosure was made by the head of the United States Africa Command, General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, who said the deployment followed consultations between Washington and Abuja on the need to strengthen efforts against terrorism in West Africa.

According to Anderson, the presence of the U.S. personnel reflects increased collaboration between Nigeria and the United States, with the team providing specialised capabilities in support of Nigeria’s ongoing counterterrorism operations. He did not disclose details of the size or scope of the mission.

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, also confirmed that a foreign military team is currently working in the country, stressing that the engagement is based on mutual agreement and strategic cooperation. He declined to provide further operational details.

Security sources indicate that the U.S. personnel are largely involved in intelligence support and capacity enhancement, aimed at enabling Nigerian forces to more effectively counter terrorist groups operating across parts of the country.

The deployment follows recent U.S. airstrikes on terrorist targets in Nigeria, which were carried out in coordination with Nigerian authorities. The strikes reportedly targeted Islamic State affiliated elements and were intended to weaken insurgent capabilities.

Nigeria continues to face security challenges from Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province, particularly in the North East and parts of the North West. Attacks on civilians and military convoys have persisted, prompting sustained military operations by Nigerian forces.

The Federal Government has consistently maintained that it is confronting terrorism and criminal violence without bias, noting that both Christian and Muslim communities have been victims of insurgent attacks. Authorities have rejected claims of systematic persecution of any religious group, emphasising that national security efforts are focused on protecting all citizens.

The latest development underscores Nigeria’s growing engagement with international partners while retaining leadership of its internal security operations, as the country intensifies efforts to restore peace and stability across affected regions.
