North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un has said the upcoming congress of the ruling Workers Party will unveil next stage plans to further strengthen the country’s nuclear war deterrent, according to the state run Korean Central News Agency on Wednesday.
Kim made the statement while directing a successful test of a large caliber multiple rocket launch system on Tuesday. He said the drill demonstrated major improvements in the weapon’s strike power, mobility and accuracy.
According to him, it is an important policy of the ruling party to build a reliable offensive capability and deterrence strategy to prevent any attempt by enemies to trigger an armed conflict.
He warned that the latest test would pose a serious threat to forces that attempt to provoke military confrontation with North Korea, describing it as a source of severe psychological pressure on adversaries.
South Korea and Japan had earlier condemned the launch of what they described as possible short range ballistic missiles by North Korea into the sea off its east coast. North Korea has continued to defy a United Nations ban on ballistic missile development.
Kim did not give further details about the timing of the party congress, although it is expected to take place within the next few weeks. The government has not officially announced date
