The Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun I Area Command, has vowed to track and arrest smugglers who attacked its officers during an anti-smuggling operation in Akokoro, Iwoye-Afon LGA.

Spokesperson Zakari Chado said officers intercepted a 12-tyre truck suspected of carrying illicit drugs and other prohibited items. Before reinforcements could arrive, the smugglers mobilized armed hoodlums, set up barricades at nine points, fired at officers, and disabled a patrol vehicle. Two officers were critically injured and are receiving intensive care.

Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Afeni condemned the attack as barbaric, affirming that it will not deter the Customs from enforcing the law. He called on community leaders to warn residents against smuggling and attacks on security personnel, stressing that offenders will face the full weight of the law.

The command is investigating the incident and coordinating efforts to apprehend all involved, reaffirming its commitment to border security and public safety.
