The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has expressed deep sadness over the tragic death of a Nigerian national, Emeka Christian, who was reportedly killed in Pune, India, following an alleged assault by two of his compatriots.
The suspects, identified as Chukwudi Okafor, aged 31, and Samuel Eze, were said to have attacked the deceased over a romantic dispute.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, the Chairperson of NIDCOM, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, extended her heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased, describing the incident as senseless and heartbreaking.
“No family should have to endure such pain and loss,” Dabiri-Erewa said.
The statement, signed by the Commission’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocol, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, disclosed that NIDCOM has called on Indian authorities to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident to ensure that justice is served.
“NIDCOM calls on the relevant Indian authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, ensuring that justice is served without delay,” the statement read.
The Commission also cautioned Nigerians living abroad to act responsibly, reminding them that their conduct reflects on the image of the country.
“As ambassadors of our great nation in your respective domains, your actions abroad reflect on Nigeria’s image,” the statement noted.
NIDCOM urged Nigerians in the diaspora to embrace unity, respect and peaceful conflict resolution, stressing that violence has no place within the Nigerian community.
“Violence has no place among us. Together, we can build a stronger and more positive diaspora community,” the Commission added.
It further appealed to Nigerians abroad to be their brother’s keeper, resolve disputes through dialogue, and uphold the highest standards of conduct wherever they reside.
