TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2025 has set a new benchmark after becoming the highest-scoring edition in the tournament’s history, with 120 goals recorded ahead of Saturday’s third-place match and Sunday’s final.

According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the tally surpasses the previous record of 102 goals set at the 2019 finals in Egypt.

In a statement published on its website on Friday, CAF said the milestone “underlines the attacking intent, technical quality and growing confidence of teams across the continent.”

Several top teams contributed to the scoring surge, including Senegal, Nigeria, Morocco and Côte d’Ivoire, while emerging players matched established stars in both influence and impact.

Morocco’s Brahim Diaz currently leads the scoring chart with five goals, followed by Egypt’s Mohammed Salah and Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen on four goals each. With both Salah and Osimhen set to feature in the third-place playoff, the race for the Golden Boot remains open.

“With two matches still to be played, the record could yet be extended,” CAF noted, adding that the tournament “has consistently delivered entertainment, drama and high-quality football.”

CAF said the attacking trend was evident from the opening round, as coaches adopted bolder tactical approaches and forwards flourished in more expansive systems.

The governing body also highlighted the impact of the 24-team format, noting that Morocco 2025 has demonstrated the growing depth of African football, producing competitive and goal-filled matches.

The previous record set at Egypt 2019 was surpassed before the tournament reached its final phase, with the knockout rounds maintaining the scoring momentum.

CAF observed that pressure “failed to stifle creativity or ambition,” while matches played across Morocco’s venues attracted strong crowds.

Stadiums, CAF said, were “filled with colour, noise and energy” throughout the competition.

As the tournament draws to a close, CAF added that the 120-goal milestone reflects broader improvements across the continent, including advances in tactical versatility, physical preparation and technical quality among players and teams at AFCON 2025.
